Dyno Tuning and Custom Mapping

Anytime that you add performance modifications to your bike, it will change the AFR (air fuel ratio).  Even changing the air cleaner and pipes will cause an unsafe lean AFR and could cause premature damage to your engine.

Even the generic pre-mapped downloads that come with the tuner software are not accurate enough to be trusted.  It would be well worth having a tuner run the bike on a dynamometer to see how close the AFR is.

Diagnostic Dyno Run:  $35.00

Includes:  HP, TQ and AFR at 100% throttle.  It also includes an evaluation on where

The AFR is at other throttle positions and RPM.  This is $35.00 well spent to determine

if the engine is safe to run with it's current AFR map.

Custom Mapping:  Starts at $250.00

Most custom mapping will only cost $250.00

Please remember that dyno tuning corrects the AFR for the optimum power and fuel mileage.

Dyno tuning is not for comparing HP or TQ to other bikes with dyno graphs from different dynamometers.

Here are examples of a recent dyno tunes.  The bike is a 2009 and has an SE air cleaner

and slip on pipes.  It had a map downloaded from the tuner software.  There are two runs.

One at 50% throttle and the other one at 100% throttle.  You can see where the AFR was.

At least this one was running rich and not dangerously lean.

This is the same bike after the dyno tune.  This bike not only gained

HP & TQ, but according to the AFR, it also gained MPG.

Here is another 2009 HD with a SE air cleaner and typical slip on pipes.

Remember, dyno readings can be manipulated to read any numbers, so

you can't compare the readings to other dynamometers.  These graphs are examples

of how correcting the AFR will give your engine optimum performance and fuel mileage.

This graph shows a 2009 with SE air cleaner, slip on pipes and SE 255 cams.

Notice the AFR.  It is a little higher than 13:1.  Sometimes the AFR

may have to be a little higher or a little lower to get optimum performance.

Richard Childress Racing

Chooses AutoDyn

By John Seaman

Richard Childress Racing chose an AutoDyn SF-845 chassis dynamometer for their new 40,000 square foot engine facility in Welcome, North Carolina. The facility has been filled with today’s latest

technology and personnel. RCR AutoDyn operators have recently been trained and they’re already measuring the characteristics of their NASCAR drivelines. RCR’s Paul Flury comments, “We have

begun to implement the capabilities of the  SuperFlow dyno into our R&D program. The data acquisition system works well and is already

benefiting our engine department.” As you can see, Paul is very excited about the capabilities of his new AutoDyn. Check the next issue of SuperFlow news for a follow-up on RCR’s progress.
